Sure you can... Get in on study groups and other activities. Or, just ask someone to join you for lunch. It's not that tough.
The people who take classes and then go home are typically the older adults that go there because they wanted to back to school and earn a degree. You can definitely make friends with the students your age. Join study groups, clubs, participate in school activities, eat lunch with others, and go in the student lounge.
From my experience, night school is exactly what your brother described. People are coming from work to go to school, there isn't really much energy left to socialize. The consensus around night school generally is to "get in and get out" I don't think it's more so about colleges then it is about time schedules. People who are constantly busy will not make an effort to socialize in educational institutions. Trying to fit in an education after a long day of work definitely wears you out. With that said, it is not impossible to meet some people you share common interests with, there will always be people where ever you go that you will befriend. So I generally think your brother's theory is rather narrow-minded and not necessarily true for ALL community colleges.
This is a small community with alot of friendships that have been formed since school. I go to church, I am involved in a couple of volunteer projects. But I seem to get people that need more from me than I am able to give (and that is alot!). My sister says that I am such a generous person w/such a big heart. Yet, I have not formed any meaningful relationships. I especially feel this when I need someone to talk to, or a shoulder to cry on. Perhaps I am being naive in expecting to somehow fit in here. My DH is not a very social person so there are not any avenues there to pursue. I had my children late in life and it did effect prior relationships cuz mine were in pre-k while their's were in junior high. I feel like such a fifth wheel, odd man out, old shoe...whatever. I have tried to reach out to people only to be put off then or later. I do not understand it because I am not a bad person; I'm honest and fun to be with. I'm not a hubby stealer and I don't step on toes. Help!

Alright, seems like u have been making contact...with others...by joining volunteer projects...and by being involved in church. Maybe u should also opt for other forms of social contact. If u live in a small community, how about starting some type of social club ? U can suggest this even in your own church...so all single ..both men..and women get invited..and in which u can all do fun social activities...u can also suggest ..a club for married- divorced...single people with children.....u all have in common ..having kids...then u can have acitivities for the grown ups and for children too. How about joining a class or something that gets you closer ..to other people who enjoy similar activities to you?..
Since u state .u are a kind open hearted person..and that u feel u are being taken advantage of. Maybe everyone around you is used ...to you being so giving...that everyone....has forgotten to gove back you..it can happen.....does not mean u have to change %26amp; turn into a cold hearted person ., maybe u need to tune up and change some things..so people do not expect..for u to give and solve it all on your own everytime....

As a whole could do more in activism to make a difference, or do you feel everyone does enough already. I know a lot of people complain, but if we really came together as a community could we make more of a difference?

I totally agree with you, wickey I strongly think that the people that are trying to make a difference are doing a good job but It seems like we could do so much more to accomplish. its like the fight for cancer, we have come along ways but there is always room for improvement. :)

We are doing a lot singly. However, what war can be won with fractured soldiers firing wildly? We need one organized voice to stand up and shout.
i feel absolutely positive that if we ALL came together we could make a tremendous difference my generation class of 2009 will hopefully make a big impact. as we already have gay and lesbian alliance groups in our school. the students did that.
We need to encourage more of us to spend at least some time in activism. I did a stint as treasurer for an LGBT organization, and was on the steering committee of two pride events. I'm not doing activism right now, but I will again. Too many of us don't do anything, and I wish we could find ways to make it more interesting or rewarding because there's strength in numbers.
i think that we are getting stronger as a community and there are some straight people who support us too
We CERTAINLY could be doing more in activism. I attended a conference In July sponsored by the group Equality Virginia about activism. That is ONE group of many who is promoting our cause. HRC is another!

I feel as a whole we could do a lot more besides having Pride Parades every year. don't get me wrong, but wasn't the initial reason to have parades was to increase awareness in the glbt community? It's okay to have fun, but we need to move beyond that. I support gay businesses and organizations, especially those that give back to the community. I know I can always do more.
I know that you can not speak for the hip hop community as a whole but if you are a contributor to the movement, in other words if you own or listen to thier music, then you have as much say so as them.
