Renting a private house to community housing or council?

i have heard from my brother in law that it is possible to rent a house you own to a community housing association or local council and that they will pay you a set rent every month and will return the property back to you at the end of the contract in the same condition that we rented it them. is this right and if so what kind of rent can we expcet? has anyone got first hand experience of this? who will be resposnible for repairs to the property and what kind of insurance..if any...will we need?

thx in advnace

If you wish to safe guard your let property could I suggest renting it to one of the following:

Forces - If you get any problems just send a letter to the individuals commanding officer.

Police - Same as above.

I know the forces are always after properties to rent as theirs are in such a state at the moment.

beware as some ot these contracts include that the company or association leasing from you will be responsible for the upkeep of the premises during the course of the aforesaid contract and from our experience they will do as little as possible and what they do carry out may not be to the standard you would want or expect. Any assocation although not obliged to do so should have no objection to putting you in touch with other people like yourselves so you can ask them for a verbal or written reference or report as to how things went when they leased their property to the same company. If they say they cannot do this due to the data protection act this is not quite true , as if i was the assocation and i knew or beleived i was doing things in a proper manner there is nothing to stop me from asking both my past and present clientele for permission to pass on their details or indeed with your permission to pass your contact details to them.
i would say firstly its a personal choice,is the house a family home?ie;cherished?or is the home an investment?

not to be a snob but you may risk damage to your property if the wrong people move in, and i would imagine you get more control over who moves in going through an letting agent.

sorry i couldnt help with the facts but i thought i would offer my opinion anyway.

goodluck
